Mighty Reserves v Kent Magpies Res

by Polly C

Having spent most of the week trying to find 11 players, we ended up with 9 players making the trek to Eltham to play against Kent Magpies Res. We went with the slightly unorthodox 3-1-3-1 formation, and lined up as follows

———Eilis the Effective——–

Yvanna the yImperial —– Preeti the Phenomenal —– Jess the Jouster

——Shannon the Spectacular—–

—MV the Magnificent Kat the Konqueror © Amanda the Amazing—

———-Nat B the Brilliant———–

Ably supported and coached by Emma the Eminent

Kent Magpies lined up in a more convention 4-4-2 (before switching to 3-3-4 when they worked out how many we didn’t have) and sought to use their advantage early, piling players forwards and breaking down the wings. Yvanna and Jess were more than a match, closing down their wingers and regularly forcing them to turn outside and try and work the ball back in.

Against the run of play we got a free kick just outside their area. We piled forwards and Shannon sent in a lovely free kick that was met by the body of Kat (not naming the specific body part…) and it sailed into the goal. 1-0! We were all so shocked that most of us burst out laughing. Shannon looked around for someone to hug, however due to a shortage of players she had no-one, so had to celebrate by herself, which she did with a little dance of joy before leaping around in joy. Go us!

And then came the equaliser. They broke through from the middle, past the defense and their midfielder finished with a decent strike across the goal and into the corner. 1-1. They celebrated like they'd won the world cup. Rallied by Captain Kat we never dropped our heads, and about 3 minutes later Eilis hoofed the ball over the halfway line, over the defense and put Nat B through on goal. the keeper came out, and the defense quickly backtracked. Nat went for the early lob and it was agonisingly wide.

And as the magpies stepped up to take the last corner of the game (which they nicely kicked out for us) the ref blew the whistle and we celebrated an amazing result, although in hindsight we really could have won the game. Fabulous performance from everyone!
